Did you know that the skin is our largest organ?
As a massage therapist I spend a lot of time up close and personal with this amazing organ. I get to see all kinds of skin in different conditions and at varying stages in the life cycle. I see how the skin so efficiently absorbs whatever we put on it and how different lifestyle choices can impact it so drastically. The skin acts as our first line of defense and is supposed to be the barrier that protects us from potentially harmful external substances. You can imagine then, that as I learned about how unregulated and potentially toxic many skincare products are in the US, that it wasn't something I could ignore. Below are some of the facts and statistics that motivated me to become a beautycounter consultant and an advocate for #betterbeauty and #saferskincare.
- 1938 is the last year that the US federal government passed a law regulating cosmetics... that's right people, it's been over 80 years!
- Over 1,400 substances are banned or restricted from personal care products in the European Union... the US bans and restricts only 30
- There are over 80,000 chemicals on the market today, with the vast majority never being tested for safety
- The average woman uses 12+ personal care products a day, which results in exposure to HUNDREDS of toxic ingredients, cancer-causing chemicals, heavy metals and hormone disruptors
